That standard exists because piercings are minor surgical procedures. A nose piercing creates an open wound through skin and, in some placements, cartilage. The risk of localized infection, allergic dermatitis, hypertrophic scarring, and migration drops sharply when the equipment is sterile and the jewelry is biocompatible. Every shortcut on any of those inputs raises the risk of a piercing that fails. We do not cut those corners — for Garment District clients or any client.

Practically, that means three things at your appointment: a fresh needle is opened in front of you and disposed of in a sharps container immediately after, the forceps and receiving tubes that support the tissue are individually packaged and steam-sterilized in an autoclave that is spore-tested regularly, and the jewelry that touches the wound is implant-grade ASTM F-136 titanium or nickel-free 14k or 18k solid gold — never surgical steel of unknown grade, never gold-plated brass, never the mystery alloys found in mall-kiosk studs.

Implant-grade ASTM F-136 titanium is our default for first-time clients — the same alloy used in surgical implants, proven biocompatible, hypoallergenic, and available in a range of anodized colors. Nickel-free 14k and 18k solid gold from established body-jewelry manufacturers is the other option we install on fresh piercings, sourced from suppliers who can verify the alloy is nickel-free at the casting stage.

Once a piercing is healed, the options open up dramatically. Our case includes a curated selection of BVLA (Body Vision Los Angeles) solid gold ends — hand-set with genuine gemstones, cast in solid 14k or 18k gold, and finished to a standard that makes them as much fine jewelry as body modification. We install BVLA on healed piercings either with your existing post or with a new one we provide, and we are happy to order specific BVLA pieces on request.

If you bring your own jewelry — from a Diamond District jeweler, an online specialist shop, or a piece you've owned for years — we inspect it first. If it meets APP standards for material, threading, finish, and sizing, we install it. If it does not, we will tell you honestly and offer alternatives. Installing unknown jewelry into a fresh wound is the fastest way to turn a clean piercing into a problem.

For nostril piercings, the practical healing window is four to six months. High nostril piercings, set in thicker cartilage, take six to nine months. Septum piercings close their fistula in around six to eight weeks but take four to six months to settle enough for comfortable jewelry changes. Surface tenderness fades much earlier than full healing — that does not mean the piercing is ready for jewelry swaps.

The aftercare routine we recommend is shorter than most people expect. Spray sterile saline on the front and back of the piercing two to three times a day. Do not touch the jewelry. Do not twist or rotate it. That is the entire daily routine for the first eight weeks. The old advice to twist or rotate has been formally retired by the APP and every other modern piercing authority — movement disrupts the tender new tissue that is trying to form around the post, and it is the single most common cause of irritation bumps we see.

What to avoid during healing: pools, hot tubs, and natural bodies of water for the first six to eight weeks; makeup, sunscreen, and skincare directly over the piercing; pulling shirts over your head; sleeping with direct pressure on the pierced side; alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, tea tree oil, and other harsh products that delay healing. Plan a downsize appointment at eight to ten weeks — we swap the longer initial post for a shorter, more comfortable piece sized to your settled tissue.

We also accept walk-ins when availability allows; the easiest walk-in windows are late mornings and early afternoons on weekdays. Saturdays book up about a week in advance.

The full appointment runs thirty to forty-five minutes for a single piercing: consultation, jewelry selection, placement marking in a hand mirror, the piercing itself (two to three seconds), and a complete aftercare walk-through. Plan for a one-hour window door to door from anywhere in Garment District. You will leave with the jewelry installed, sterile saline, and a clear plan for the next eight to ten weeks.
